P1 awards network contract to ZTE

Malaysian WiMAX telecommunications company Packet One Networks (P1) has awarded the full $76m (£50m) turnkey contract for the Phase III network expansion to ZTE, a Chinese telecommunications provider.

The contract will see ZTE deploy the P1 W1MAX network, including network planning and design, equipment supply, engineering services and WiMAX network optimisation, to cover 65 per cent of the Malaysian population by 2012.

In March 2009, P1 signed with ZTE to deploy Phase II of its national network roll-out for $28m to expand coverage from 35 to 45 per cent of the population by the end of this year.
