Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has received an order from Shougang Iron and Steel Group, Peking, to supply the electrical equipment for a new plate mill. The order, worth around 14 million Euros, includes the main drives, the basic and process automation, and a materials tracking system. Start-up is scheduled for August 2006.
Shougang, formerly Capital Steel, is the third largest producer of iron and steel in China. The company operates a production complex in and around Peking with an annual capacity of around eight million tonnes of crude steel. In the course of comprehensive modernisation and also to improve the air quality in Peking, Shougang is currently moving its production plants to locations in the Hebei province.
The new plate rolling mill is being built in Qinhuangdao, a sea port, and is designed for an annual production of approximately 1.2 million tonnes. The plant will make plates with a thickness of between five and 100 millimetres and a width of up to 4150 millimetres for ship-building, gas and oil pipelines, pressurised containers and bridge structures.
The new plant includes a heating furnace, a plate rolling stand, a rapid cooling facility and a hot plate leveller. The adjacent finishing shop has two cooling tables, an inspection line and a shearing line.
Siemens is supplying the automation system, the sensors and the AC drives, including a twin drive with a rated output of two times eight megawatts and a maximum torque of two times 3820 kilonewtons at 250 per cent overload. The cylindrical-rotor synchronous motors to be used are said to be especially suitable for the rough operating conditions in a plate rolling mill.
The automation system includes the basic and process automation and operator control and visualisation equipment. All the process parameters will be kept within close tolerance limits by a combination of analytical process models and technological controls.
Special modules will be provided for functions such as Plan View Control, thermo-mechanical rolling and the production of metal plates of variable thickness as well as for optimisation of rolling sequence control and shearing.
Siemens is also carrying out the engineering of the electrical equipment for the whole rolling mill and finishing facility. This also includes integration of automation software packages for the heating furnace, the rapid cooling and the levelling machines. All the components and systems used are part of the integrated “Siroll PM” solution for plate rolling mills.
In addition to the equipment, Siemens is also responsible for monitoring installation of the equipment, commissioning and customer training. The project will be carried out in close co-operation with Shougang, which is providing locally produced standard motors, the power distribution system and the transformers as well as the infrastructural electrical systems, the heat treatment line and the heating furnaces.
