Safety tape

The IEEE has begun work on developing a new standard to address the security of encrypted tape systems.

The privacy and integrity of information stored on removable tape is a significant issue for the public and many businesses.

And because of it, the IEEE has now begun work on developing a new standard to address the security of encrypted tape systems, such as those for digital magnetic tape.

When completed, the standard, IEEE P1619.1, “Standard Architecture for Encrypted Variable Block Storage Media”, will recommend methods, algorithms and data-protection modes to ensure a higher level of media security in storage systems.

Expected to be completed in March 2006, it will extend the existing IEEE P1619 standard from disk encryption to tape encryption.
