A £50m medical technology centre of excellence is to be founded on the Plymouth International Medical and TechnologyPark at Derriford, creating a minimum of 250 jobs

An outline planning application was submitted by Health Properties (Plymouth), on behalf of the health operator Circle. They took the decision to make the multi-million pound investment in Plymouth following negotiations with the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA), which owns the park.

The new centre of clinical excellence will offer world class surgical, diagnostic and treatment services for both NHS and private paid patients. The facility will work closely with the NHS and other health providers in the city and will be co-owned and run by all who work in it.

The new building will be designed by international architects Foster + Partners and will house the latest medical technology and treatment facilities over three floors as well as incorporating many environmentally friendly features.

Steve O’Higgins, development manager for major projects at South West RDA, said: ‘The centre of clinical excellence will further strengthen the role of Plymouth International Medical and TechnologyPark as a base for health and medical-related organisations and in helping maximise the economic potential for Plymouth of its growing health sector centred around Derriford.’
