FPL Energy, one of the largest producers of wind energy in the US, is to build more wind farms in New Mexico, California, Iowa, West Virginia and the Dakotas.
A 200MW wind energy facility in New Mexico will feature 135 1.5MW wind turbines. Construction of the facility will begin this year. Once completed in 2003, it will generate enough electricity to supply 94,000 homes in the state. In California, a 150MW wind plant is also expected to begin commercial operation in 2003, while in Iowa, the company’s 98MW facility will begin operation this year.
FPL Energy will also add 37MW of output to its Washington-Oregon border wind farm, increasing the total capacity of that facility to 300MW. That project will be completed by the end of this year.
Earlier this year, FPL Energy acquired 123 MW of wind assets located in Texas and Pennsylvania from National Wind Power.
