The Power and Water Solutions division of Emerson Process Management, formerly Westinghouse Process Control, has entered into a contract with the US District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DCWASA) to modernise process control systems throughout the facility’s water and wastewater infrastructure.
The utility itself serves 2.1 million people in a 725 square-mile area that includes District of Columbia and nearby Maryland and Virginia suburbs.
Under the $35 million contract, Emerson will engineer and install three Ovation Information and Control Systems for DCWASA – one to control operations at the Blue Plains treatment facility, and two separate systems to monitor DCWASA’s water distribution channel and wastewater collection system. The Blue Plains facility is the largest advanced wastewater treatment facility in the world, covering 150 acres and with a peak capacity of 370 million gallons per day.
Emerson will also help DCWASA maintain operational capability and minimise plant interruptions during the upgrade through a step-by-step process of exchanging existing equipment with new components.
Emerson will install Ovation at the DCWASA complex in three distinct phases, with phases one and two scheduled for completion in 2007, and phase three in late 2010. Phase one will include modernisation of the Blue Plains control room and control system. Phase two will include the application of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to monitor remote sites in the water distribution channel and wastewater collection system. Finally, phase three will focus on applying Ovation to specific plant process, and overall system testing.
In addition, the Ovation upgrade will incorporate AMSinside, an Emerson Process Management predictive maintenance software package that will allow DCWASA to streamline maintenance activities.
