An increasing number of consumers want a cinema in their living rooms, and this demand is creating a growing market for large-screen, high-definition, wall-mounted displays. But no matter how stylish a home theatre one tries to build, connection cables always get in the way.
The most promising solution to the problem is wireless transmission technology. The problem is that conventional wireless technology compresses images before transmission. Therefore, it’s unable to achieve image quality on a par with a system that uses cables, because the repeated compression and decompression of the signal causes the picture quality to deteriorate.
Not so with the new system from JVC. This system transmits pixel data instead of a compressed signal directly between the tuner and the display, eliminating the problem of deterioration.
Dubbed the ‘Optical Wireless High Definition Video Transmission System’, the system itself uses a laser diode transmitter to transmit the signal and an avalanche photodiode as the receiver.
The system achieves transmission speeds of 1.25 Gbit/sec, a level previously considered difficult with conventional wireless systems and has a transmission distance of 10 metres, making it possible to develop wireless home theatre systems even in large living rooms.
Because the transmitter transmits a light beam to achieve its high speed, it is necessary to accurately focus the beam from the transmitter on the high-speed receiver if the system is to work properly. For that reason, the JVC system comes with an automatic optical axis alignment unit that makes these adjustments on its own, relieving the user from what can be a difficult task.
