Bridgestone Corporation has earmarked $94.3 million to build a plant in Shenyang to produce steel cord for radial tyres. The new steel cord plant will supply its output mainly to Bridgestone’s truck and bus tyre plant in China.

Early last month, Bridgestone established a wholly owned subsidiary Bridgestone (Shenyang) Steel Cord in the country following approval for the plant from the Chinese provincial authorities in Liaoning.

The new plant is slated to begin operating in October 2005 and its daily production capacity should reach 70 tons by the end of 2007, according to the company.

Bridgestone (Shenyang) Steel Cord’s plant will be the Bridgestone Group’s sixth steel cord plant. It joins the Kuroiso and Saga Plants in Japan, the Clarksville Plant in the US, the Cagliari Plant in Italy, and the Rayong Plant in Thailand.
