Shielded power

The US-based IEEE has approved a new standard for the testing of shielded cables using very low frequencies.

It also approved revised standards for the design and installation of submarine power cables and the testing of cable-pulling lubricants.

The new standard is IEEE 400.2, “Guide for Field Testing of Shielded Power Cable Systems Using Very Low Frequency (VLF),” which addresses concerns when field testing shielded, medium-voltage cables related to the use of cables having extruded dielectric insulation.

DC testing can cause service-aged cables with solid dielectric insulation to fail after they return to service. This guide provides information needed to avoid this by testing with VLF. It describes withstand and diagnostic tests and offers charts on how effective VLF testing is for various cable insulation problems.

One revised standard, IEEE 1120, “Guide for the Planning, Design, Installation, and Repair of Submarine Power Cable Systems,” expands on the original standard that addresses how to plan, design, permit, install, commission and repair submarine power cable systems. The prior version assumed the user is knowledgeable about these cables. The revised guide expands the range of topics covered and adds explanations so it can be used by a broader audience, including inexperienced engineers.

The other revised standard, IEEE 1210, “Standard Tests for Determining Compatibility of Cable-Pulling Lubricants with Wire and Cable,” upgrades the existing standard to account for newer cable jackets considered in ICEA/NEMA standards. It defines test methods and acceptable results for evaluating the compatibility of lubricants with various cable coverings.
