BASF and MPI-P open Carbon Materials Innovation Center

BASF and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) have opened a joint research and development platform — the Carbon Materials Innovation Center (CMIC) — at BASF’s Ludwigshafen site.

A multidisciplinary task force comprising chemists, physicists and material scientists will research the scientific principles and potential applications of carbonised materials.

Activities in the laboratory will include synthesising and characterising new materials and evaluating their potential uses in energy and electronic applications.

The total investment for the three-year joint research and development platform is around €10m (£8m).
