Hitachi selects MTU to provide power packs for express trains

Hitachi Rail Europe has selected Tognum subsidiary MTU as its preferred supplier of rail power packs for the Hitachi Super Express Trains. MTU will also service the power packs for 27-and-a-half years.

The contract, the value of which exceeds €200m (£160m), sees MTU provide 250 Powerpacks with 700kW 12V 1600 R80L engines.

MTU will design a bespoke rail power pack arrangement for IEP inclusive of the 12V 1600 R80L engine, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to meet EU stage IIIB emissions requirements, an induction generator, a cooling system and a CAPOS starting system.

All 92 trains will be fitted with at least one 700kW MTU Powerpack with series 1600 12-cylinder engine.
