Siemens and Huawei JV promotes TD-SCDMA

Siemens Mobile and Huawei Technologies have formed a $100 million Joint Venture company in China to develop, manufacture and market products based on TD-SCDMA technology.

Siemens Mobile and Huawei Technologies have formed a Joint Venture (JV) company in China to develop, manufacture and market products based on Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) technology.

The two companies plan to invest $100 million in the new venture, which will be based in Beijing. Siemens Mobile will hold 51% of the joint venture, while Huawei Technologies will hold 49%.

TD-SCDMA infrastructure products are currently undergoing field tests in China, and the first commercial products from the joint venture will be rolled out in 2004.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry, by the end of July 2003, the number of mobile subscribers in China had reached 234 million, making it the largest mobile phone market in the world.
