Smiths to supply X-ray systems for US airports

Smiths Detection has been awarded $43.5m (£27.5m) by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to supply Advanced Technology X-ray systems for deployment at airport checkpoints across the US.

The order for HI-SCAN 6040aTiX systems is one of the first delivery orders placed against a five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract with a ceiling of $325m.

The award of the IDIQ contract was announced earlier in September.

According to Smiths, HI-SCAN 6040aTiX systems capture multiple views of carry-on bags in a single sweep to provide more information about every piece of luggage. They also feature software algorithms that can be upgraded to detect evolving threats.
