Jury rules against Microsoft

SPX Corporation subsidiary Imagexpo has been awarded $62.3 million in compensatory damages following a patent infringement suit against Microsoft Corporation.

SPX Corporation subsidiary Imagexpo has been awarded compensatory damages following a patent infringement suit against Microsoft Corporation in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The litigation relates to a complaint that Imagexpo filed in October 2002 against Microsoft. The complaint alleged that an Imagexpo patent, related to real-time conferencing, is infringed by the NetMeeting Whiteboard feature of various Microsoft products.

A jury awarded Imagexpo $62.3 million and found that Microsoft wilfully infringed the patent.

Additional issues remain for the court to rule upon that could ultimately impact the amount of the award, and any final ruling and award by the court is subject to appeal.
