Kier installs framework for hangar

Kier Eastern, part of the Kier Group, has begun installing the main trusses for a Ryanair hangar and flight simulator centre at Stansted Airport.

The £11m hangar measures 128m by 58m and has a maximum height of 25m. The interior will be supported by four structural steel trusses, designed and manufactured by Bradford-based Barrett Steel Buildings.

The centre, capable of accommodating up to five Boeing 737 NG aircraft at any one time, is designed to support a range of operational requirements. As well as aircraft maintenance, the hangar will house three storeys of workshops, offices and crew training facilities at the rear, in addition to two flight simulators.

An adjacent warehouse covering 1,680 sq m will also be built as part of the 38-week project, which is scheduled for completion on 6 October.
