Land and sea contracts for GD

General Dynamics Land Systems has been awarded a $380m contract to upgrade Abrams tanks with the M1A2 System Enhancement Package (SEP).

According to General Dynamics, the M1A2 SEP is the most technologically advanced Abrams tank and features second-generation thermal sights and improved armour.

This contract is part of an overall M1A2 tank upgrade program that integrates new information technologies to improve combat capabilities with enhanced command and control features, like colour maps and displays, high-density computer memory, increased microprocessing speed and networked communications.

Vehicle upgrades will begin in November, with deliveries scheduled for May 2008 through to November 2009.

Separately, the US Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $20.1m contract modification for nuclear-submarine and shore-support facility work.

Electric Boat will provide management, design and installation services for shore-support facilities consolidations and operational nuclear-submarine retrofits.

Work is expected to be completed by November 2009.

Initially awarded in March 2004, the contract could be worth more than $1.1bn over five years if all options are exercised and funded.
