Last week’s poll: funding mechanisms

The government has identified Reaction Engines’ SABRE engine as a high priority project and is providing £60m in funding to the company, but is this enough to maintain the UK’s technological edge?

The most surprising element to last week’s poll was the wholesale rejection of private investment as the most appropriate funding mechanism for high-vale technology projects.

One per cent of respondents believe such technology projects should be funded solely by private investors, with nearly a quarter (22 per cent) taking the opposite viewpoint.

That isn’t to say, however, that there’s no room for private investment as 37 per cent said government capital gives projects the credibility they need to attract further investment.

The majority of respondents to last week’s poll took the broader view, agreeing that the SABRE engine is worthy of investment but projects with equal credibility should not be left behind.
