Should the UK be pressing ahead with seabed mining technology?
Almost three-quarters of respondents to last week’s poll approved of mining the seabed for metallic deposits near deep-sea thermal vents. The largest proportion of the 185 respondents, 52 per cent, said that it could generate technologies with good potential for export, while 23 per cent said that the mining itself could be a lucrative and profitable industry. Some 15 per cent expressed concerns that it could destroy an environment which could yield valuable insights for medicine and life sciences, while 11 per cent were worried about general environmental damage.
