Many automotive companies are working technologies towards a ‘self-driving’ car. What are the biggest barriers to these finding a place on the road?
Public acceptance is the biggest hurdle to the introduction of fully autonomous cars, according to the respondents to last week’s poll. Slightly over 50 per cent said that drivers prefer to be in control of vehicles and are likely to be unwilling to embrace self-drive technology, compared with 26 per cent who said that legal and regulatory barriers were the highest. Just over 19 per cent thought there were still technical problems to be overcome, while the smallest group, 4 per cent, thought automotive OEMs were too conservative to fully get behind the technology.
