In order to meet forthcoming emissions legislation and increased market competition, the automotive industry is increasingly evaluating stronger materials for use in engine production.
Several automotive manufacturers are focusing on Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) for their next generation of cylinder blocks and heads. A number of major automotive manufacturers are scheduled to decide on new engine designs and materials in the near future.
In response to the anticipated increase in CGI production, ABB Automation and SinterCast have entered into a co-operation agreement to develop and implement foundry-specific solutions for the production of CGI from heated and non-heated automated pouring furnaces.
In comparison to conventional ladle production of CGI castings, automated pouring furnaces can provide higher productivity and improved consistency.
Together, SinterCast and ABB Automation provide complete CGI production solutions, from automated induction melting through metal treatment, metallurgical process control and automated pouring.
The collaboration extends to exchanging information on relevant projects worldwide and mutual benefit of the marketing resources of both companies, says Bertil Hagman, President and CEO, SinterCast.
