Lockheed Martin and TRW win $2.6 billion satellite contract

Lockheed Martin and TRW have been awarded a $2.698 billion contract by the US Air Force to develop the US military’s next-generation communications satellite system.

The US Air Force has awarded a $2.698 billion System Development and Demonstration contract for the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite program to a team comprised of Lockheed Martin and TRW.

According to the US Air Force, the contract calls for the development and delivery of the US Department of Defence’s (DoD) next generation highly secure, high capacity communications satellites and ground command and control system as a follow-on capability to the DoD’s current Milstar communications satellite program.

Lockheed Martin will lead the contractor team as the prime integrator and provider of the Spacecraft Bus and ground command and control segments with TRW providing the satellite payload.

The contract will culminate in the delivery of two AEHF satellites and the ground command and control system.

AEHF will reportedly provide 10-times greater total capacity over Milstar communications satellites allowing tactical military communications such as real-time video, battlefield maps and targeting data.

The first of two satellites under this contract is scheduled for launch in 2006.
