The success or otherwise of the London Olympics will be entirely down to how well we sort out the transport links to and from the site.
Anyone who thinks we can’t build the necessary stadiums in time for 2012 is missing the point. Our record on building structures on time is not too bad — look, for instance, at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, the Manchester Commonwealth Games complex and even the new Wembley, which is well on the way to being completed on time.
No, the Olympics will stand or fall on the UK’s ability to get the athletes and spectators around the various venues in London — and that is where our record is far from good.
Poor transportation was the big problem for the 1996 Atlanta games in Georgia — mainly due to problems with traffic congestion — and I would hate to see the same happen in my home country.
