LONTRA IS a start-up developing a novel compressor and engine. The Lindsey Engine and Blade Compressor are small, quiet and highly efficient. The engine is up to 37 per cent more efficient than traditional engines. The company was founded in 2004 and the following year the team started working with Imperial Innovations, the commercialisation company of Imperial College. Lontra initially started working with Imperial under the Carbon Trust Incubator Programme.

Lontra brings the technology and marketing skills to the collaboration, and Imperial a range of technology commercialisation skills and experience. For example, in developing the current relationships with industry partners, Imperial provided market research to identify target markets and key industry players, Lontra developed and presented the technology to industry. Imperial assisted further with financial modelling and advice for potential deals and Lontra is in the process of negotiating those deals. Imperial’s technical collaboration has principally been focused on the validation of the

Blade Compressor and Lindsey Engine. Imperial’s specialist expertise in mechanical engineering and engine testing and development was provided to assess the technology and provide reports and feedback on Lontra’s design and development plans. Imperial has a strong research base in this area and has core skills in modelling and testing combustion and fluid mechanics. These skills, coupled with excellent links with industry, continue to be a valuable resource to Lontra. The overall objective of the collaboration, which continues to date, has been to move the design from a technology project to a commercially viable proposition.
