Lucent pursuing ‘strategic alternatives’ for optical fibre business

Lucent Technologies is reviewing selling its Optical Fiber Solutions business or forming a joint venture.

Lucent Technologies today said it is pursuing a variety of strategic alternatives for its Atlanta-based Optical Fiber Solutions business, a supplier of optical fibres and related technologies for the telecommunications industry. The company is reviewing such options as selling the business or forming a joint venture.

The company said the decision to look at alternatives for this business is part of Lucent’s continuing strategy to sharpen its focus on the systems, software and services that will deliver the next-generation communications infrastructure.

Bill O’Shea, executive vice president, corporate strategy and business development, noted that Lucent’s optical fibre business is a leading player in a growing market, and he described its performance as ‘stellar,’ growing by more than 60 percent in fiscal 2000.

Optical Fiber Solutions pioneered the design of premium fibres optimised for specific network applications, such as its TrueWave portfolio developed for long-distance traffic, its AllWave products for metropolitan network traffic as well as specially designed fibres for undersea networks.

Lucent’s AllWave fibre recently won ‘The Discover Award’ from Discover magazine and the ‘Technology of the Year Award’ from Industry Week magazine.

Lucent’s fibre business employs some 6,300 people, with its headquarters and largest manufacturing facility located in Norcross, GA, a suburb of Atlanta. It also has wholly owned and joint-venture facilities in Carrollton, GA, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, Connecticut, Denmark, China, Japan, Russia, Germany and Brazil.

To keep up with demand, the Optical Fiber Solutions business has been in the midst of a $1 billion expansion program, which includes a significant expansion at its fibre manufacturing facility in Norcross. It recently opened a fibre cable manufacturing facility in Campinas, Brazil, designed to serve all of Latin America and the Caribbean.
