Lynx helicopter testing

The Lynx helicopter has been manufactured by GKN Westland since the late 1960s. The helicopter is used by the British Army, the Royal Navy and is exported to a number of other countries. The final point of manufacture of every Lynx helicopter is the testing and fitting of the blade sets. The blades are made from an advanced carbon fibre composite to ensure maximum predictability of life span but this can only be maintained if each blade is set perfectly. When the helicopter blade test rig drive system spectacularly failed, Eurotherm Drives was able to come to the rescue, designing, building and delivering a replacement – a 3600A, 12-phase, 24-pulse sectional thyristor – quickly and allowing GKN Westland to maintain its manufacturing operation within the strict replacement schedule.
