Making contacts in multimedia

Amphenol-Tuchel has developed a connector with sliding contacts for automatic SMT placement according to the requirements of the MMCA specification.

Applications which require mobile mass storage in the form of the stamp sized MultiMediaCard are becoming more widespread. This technology is currently being driven by the increased demand for downloadable music using the MP3 format.

The application for this technology is moving beyond just music players to intelligent phones, and digital cameras that all require a connector to contact the MultiMediaCard.  For these applications Amphenol-Tuchel has developed a connector with sliding contacts for automatic SMT placement according to the requirements of the MMCA specification. The new contact geometry helps to further improve the acceptance of the tolerances for co-planarity in mass production.

Two pre-mating contacts allow for safe hot card insertion and removal. A polarisation notch built into the connector prevents a incorrect card insertion. The optimal positioning of the SMT contacts use up a minimum of board real estate. The connector features a simple push-pull card handling for insertion and removal.
