Medium-voltage drives

Reliability problems caused by under-powered slip-ring motors used to drive fans on the pre-heaters at the UK’s largest cement factory in Hope, Derbyshire factory were causing Lafarge Cement to miss production targets. ABB won a contract to replace the two 1.6MW motors and recommended 1.8MWACS1000 medium-voltage drives rather than LV types as there would be less of a voltage drop over the 200-metre distance between the drives and the motors. Also, the sinusoidal output waveform of the ACS1000 meant there would be no voltage reflections.
