The grant will provide the Institute for Microstructural and Mechanical Process Engineering at the University of Sheffield (IMMPETUS) with up to 15 years worth of funding.
The extra cash will mean that the Institute can provide underpinning research and technology transfer to a wide range of companies that operate in different market sectors. It will also allow IMMPETUS to react quickly to understand and develop new disruptive technologies to the point of commercial reality.

More than 50 staff and students from three university departments – Automatic Control & Systems Engineering, Engineering Materials and Mechanical Engineering – currently work on IMMPETUS projects. The institute has world-class experimental facilities and works with major companies including Converteam, Corus, Firth Rixson, Outokumpu Stainless, Siemens VAI, Timet UK, Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering and TWI.
