Helsinki City Transport (HKL) has chosen German industrial giant Siemens to renovate its metro network.
HKL, or Helsingin Kaupungin Liikennelaitos, contracted the mobility division of Siemens to supply the €100m (£89m) fully automated driverless metro system, which is scheduled to go into operation in the Finnish capital in 2013.
Siemens will supply the automated control systems, the operations control centre, the signalling system and the onboard communication facilities, together with the platform screen doors and the passenger information system.
Trainguard automated control systems made by Siemens Mobility are already in use in Paris, Beijing, New York and Guangzhou, and are being deployed in Algiers, Budapest, Istanbul, Barcelona, Nanjing and Sao Paulo.
Furthermore, Siemens Mobility has modernised the Nuremberg metro system in Germany, making it a driverless system, and is currently modernising Paris Line 1, the first line of the Paris Métro, whose first section was opened in 1900.
