Metso supplies boiler fired by recovered fuel to CHP plant

Process industry machinery provider Metso will supply Mälarenergi’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Västerås, Sweden, with the world’s largest recovered-fuel-fired boiler.

Using a fuel input of 167MW, the boiler will utilise circulating fluidised bed (CFB) technology and serve as a base unit to meet the district-heating power needs of Västerås and Hallstahammar municipalities.

Metso’s delivery will account for about 30 per cent of the €300m (£249.7m) modernisation project of the CHP plant.

The principal fuel for the boiler will be recovered fuel prepared from municipal waste and there is also a possibility that the boiler will burn biofuel.
