The MoD has awarded imaging technology specialists Oxford Metrics Group (OMG) a two-year, £475,000 contract to develop image processing software.

OMG provides image understanding products for the entertainment, defence, life science and engineering industries. The contract was awarded as part of the MoD’s ‘Competition of Ideas’ (COI) initiative.

The contract will be fulfilled by OMG’s 2d3 division, which develops advanced image processing software for defence and visual effects. The proposal is to provide more accurate reconnaissance vehicle and target geo-location accuracy by integrating vision-based tracking (VBT) technology with global positioning (GPS) and inertial navigation (INS) systems.

Instead of aggregating the result of independent systems, OMG’s proposed system will combine these tasks in a single autonomous process which will improve the accuracy of precision targeting. The combined technology is initially proposed for use on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), although can be applied to any aerial or ground reconnaissance vehicle in order to lead to more accurate target geolocation.
