Moog has received its second contract of several that are expected to total more than $140 million for the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) Phase of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
In this latest contract, BAE Systems has signed an agreement with the company for a wingfold actuation system with a value of $9.5 million. The contract calls for non-recurring engineering, data, qualification, support, and five shipsets of flight test hardware. Delivery of the hardware will take place in 2005.
Two of Moog’s patented ‘Splinelock’ wingfold actuators will be used on each of the planned 480 Navy version of the aircraft, one per wing. The actuators reduce the tip to tip distance of the wing by translating each tip from a horizontal to a vertical plane, thereby allowing the planes to be stored on both the main and lower decks of an aircraft carrier.
The single-engine F-35 itself will be manufactured in three versions: a conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant for the US Air Force, an aircraft carrier version (CV) for the US Navy, and a short-takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) version for the US Marine Corps and Royal Navy.
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, a business area of Lockheed Martin, is developing the F-35 along with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems, as well as overseas countries including the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Denmark, and Norway.
