Motorola, the US semiconductor and telecoms giant, reported a three-fold growth in quarterly profits on the back of a continued global demand for mobile phones. The Illinois-based manufacturer, which created 1,000 jobs last year at its eastern Scotland plant in Bathgate, revealed operating profits up to $514m from $159m in the previous quarter. However, analysts claimed the strong market should have led to a greater sales boost than the rise to $8.5bn from $8.3bn in the same period last year.
