KDDI Corporation, in collaboration with Hitachi, has launched the Muchip Reader, which reads the world's smallest sized RFID tags, for use with Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.
The mu chip (or µ-chip) is the smallest RFID integrated circuit currently manufactured. Like other RFID devices, it provides the ability to track, trace and monitor items cost effectively, for retail, storage and security purposes.
By holding the mobile up to it, the Muchip Reader reads off information which is then sent to the phone using Bluetooth technology. Each mu chip can store up to 38 digits, including a tracking system, which records not only the information, but also where it was extracted from. Since it is compact in size, it can be used anywhere, even in places without LAN network infrastructure.
Production of the Muchip Reader is slated to begin on October 2.
