Timken has announced an agreement with Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer Xiangtan Electric Manufacturing (XEMC) to establish a joint venture in China to manufacture ultra-large-bore bearings for wind turbines.
As part of the joint venture, the companies will build a new $38m facility in Xiangtan, Hunan province, for the manufacturing of the bearings.
According to Ohio-based Timken, its power transmission and friction management solutions help to improve the performance, durability and reliability of wind turbine systems. It will have an ownership stake of 80 percent in the joint venture.
The construction of the new plant is scheduled to begin in 2008, and Timken and XEMC expect to employ more than 110 people as part of the project.
