Wisconsin Power and Light (WPL) has bought 41 wind turbines from Denmark-based Vestas Wind Systems for construction of the Cedar Ridge Wind Farm in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
The wind farm, which will cover a 31.6km2 area in the towns of Eden and Empire, will contain the Vestas V82 turbine. Each one is able to produce 1.65 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power 17,000 homes.
In May, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approved WPL’s application to build the farm at an expected cost of $180m, excluding AFUDC (Accumulated Funds Used During Construction). WPL is an Alliant Energy company.
Construction has been scheduled to start in August with the installation of turbine access roads, foundations and the substation. The wind farm is expected to be operating by the end of 2008.
Once completed, the Cedar Ridge Wind Farm will become Alliant Energy’s first fully owned and operated wind farm.
Separately, Vestas has also received an order of 182 V82-1.65 megawatt wind turbines from BP Alternative Energy North America.
Under the agreement, Vestas will supply and commission the wind turbines at the start of the third quarter of 2008.
BP Alternative Energy North America also ordered Vestas wind turbines in April. It claims to have the potential to develop 100 wind projects in the US with a total capacity of 15,000MW.
