What’s claimed to be the world’s first full-colour personal video player priced at under $100 will hit retail stores in the US this month.
The ZVUE! personal video player (PVP) from HandHeld Entertainment will play videos, music videos and MP3s.
Content will be available on postage stamp-sized ZCARD! Digital/MultiMediaCards and will be priced starting at $5.99. The ZCARD! will be available in capacities ranging from 8 MBytes (MB) to 256MBytes – enough to hold a two-hour movie.
To make that possible, the video and multimedia content is first decompressed at variable bit rates up to 100:1 prior to storage on the ZCARD! The same content is decompressed by the player at real-time speeds using a Motorola Dragonball i.MXL processor.
‘The ‘Hhe’ video compression technology used is a proprietary algorithm that was developed specifically to produce superior compression performance yet maintain reasonable complexity in decompression,’ said Eric Hamilton, chief scientist of HandHeld Entertainment.
‘Also, the security and integrity of compressed content is extremely high with the HHe format due to the encryption scheme and other features we’ve employed specifically to thwart HHe-formatted content from being ‘Napsterised’.’
The ZVUE! operates on four AA batteries and provides approximately eight to 10 hours of viewing/listening time.
