PT Telkom, Indonesia’s largest telecommunications operator, has selected a Motorola’s CDMA2000 1X system to bring 3G wireless services to the ten provinces of Sumatra.
The estimated contract value for the initial phase of the CDMA2000 1X network rollout is nearly $30 million. The network is set for commercial deployment in April 2003, and will run on the 800 MHz band.
Motorola’s CDMA2000 1X architecture is said to build upon existing 2G or 2.5G networks by adding packet based network elements.
For the PT Telkom network, these network elements include the access node from Motorola’s partner Cisco Systems that enables the radio access network to be Internet Protocol (IP) capable.
