Fisher-Rosemount, the process management division of Emerson, has acquired 100% of radar level gauging specialist Saab Marine Electronics for some SKr800million – some £58million. The former subsidiary of Saab AB, will become Rosemount’s centre of excellence for level instrumentation.
‘Adding Saab Marine Electronics to our Rosemount family of instrumentation solutions gives us a leading position in the rapidly growing land-based radar level gauging markets, said John Berra, president of Fisher-Rosemount and Emerson executive vice president. ‘It’s one of the many ways we’re helping customers improve measurement and control while optimising return on their automation assets.’
Radar is the fastest growing level measurement technology because of radar products’ high accuracy, reliability, and ability to withstand difficult process conditions. It is used aboard marine vessels as well as in land-based tanks at refineries, terminals, and chemical plants.
Saab Marine Electronics’ products were developed from a radar altimeter for missiles produced by Saab. Further development of this technology has resulted in a spin-off for the commercial market in the form of tanker level-gauging systems. The company’s radar-based level-gauging are now used extensively in the oil and process industries.
In addition to the process area, the acquisition will also give Fisher-Rosemount access into the marine market. According to Rosemount’s president Ed Monser: ‘Saab Marine Electronics takes a solutions approach to its marine customers needs, and it can now provide a more comprehensive solution by offering a wide variety of Fisher-Rosemount products.’
