Raytheon has been awarded a $30 million contract by the US Army’s Communications and Electronics Command for the production of the AN/VAS-5 Driver’s Vision Enhancer (DVE) for the United States Marine Corps.
The DVE is a thermal imaging system, which is said to provide drivers of both tactical wheeled vehicles and combat tread vehicles the ability to manoeuvre safely through atmospheric obscurants and darkness.
It is said to be easily adaptable to a variety of platforms for enhanced situational awareness, a uniform view of the battlefield and silent watch capability.
The contract includes DVE systems, plus spares, for the M1A1 Abrams tank, Light Armoured Vehicle, Assault Amphibious Vehicle, M88 Recovery Vehicle andArmoured Vehicle Launched Bridge.
Initial deliveries, which will begin in the second quarter of 2001, are scheduled to be complete by October 2002.
