Reacting to China

Areva, the French state-owned nuclear engineering company, has won contracts worth €8bn to supply state-run China Guangdong Nuclear Power (CGNPC) with two advanced nuclear reactors.

Under the contract, Areva will also provide uranium to fuel the reactors until 2026. According to Areva, the third-generation pressurised water reactors would increase CGNPC’s output by 3,400MW.

The reactors are scheduled to be built in the city of Taishan, in Guangdong province, in 2013 to 2014.

China plans to build 32 nuclear plants by 2020 to meet the country’s increasing power demands.
