Reducing radiation dose five-fold

Sectra, the Swedish IT and medical technology company, is to launch a mammography system that, it claims, will achieve the same high image quality as today’s film-based systems – with radiation doses that are five times lower.

Clinical tests are scheduled to begin in Swedish hospitals, and the new mammography system is expected to be ready for commercial use in Sweden in the beginning of year 2002. Other digital mammography systems are available on the market today, but they require radiation doses up to 10 times to achieve equivalent image quality to the Sectra system, the company claims. As a result, digital mammography has not been considered practical in the Swedish market.

The new technology was originally developed by a group of researchers working with particle physics at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. It has been refined by Mamea Imaging AB, a company owned jointly by Sectra and several researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Continued development work is being conducted under Mats Danielsson, an Associate Professor of Particle Physics as well as President of Mamea Imaging.

The first clinical trial units will be available during the second quarter of 2001. Initially, the system will be delivered to Swedish hospitals, but Sectra plans to begin trials internationally during the latter half of 2001. Research institutes in Europe and the US will be involved in the early clinical analyses.

Sectra will present the new method at RSNA 2000, a Radiology trade fair, which will be held in Chicago during November 26-December 1, 2000.
