Moyresa of Spain, a major operator in the oilseed crushing and refining industry, has selected nine Rolls-Royce K-gas engines to power three major electricity cogeneration projects in Barcelona and Bilbao.
The nine 18 cylinder engines, which run on natural gas, will produce steam and hot water for the three project sites, utilising each plant’s output of over 7MW of thermal energy while exporting about 5MW to the Spanish national grid at times of high peak demand.
Three KVGS-18G4 units are to be installed at the Moyresa cogeneration plant in Barcelona, where they will produce up to 9.9 MW of electrical power and the other six, three at each site, will power the company’s Soja and Girasol facilities in Bilbao. All will enter service between the end of 2004 and late summer 2005.
The G4 variant chosen for these new power projects was introduced to the power generation market two years ago. With an output of 200kW of electrical power per cylinder and an efficiency of more than 43 per cent, the G4 has, according to Rolls-Royce, been developed to ensure it meets nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission requirements and EU regulations for unburned hydrocarbons.
