Vector motors are used to control the flow of a continuous web of material under a high speed rotating knife that is driven directly from a permanent magnet servo motor. A position controller with software CAM is used to control the relationship between the position of the web and the position of the rotating knife.
By controlling the dwell and stroke of the knife in software, the length of cut material can be changed on the fly. Unlike velocity based systems, the position controlled servo and the vector motors are positioned `locked’ ensuring precise registration and eliminating long term drift.
In this application, the vector motors deliver high torque and precise position control. The servo motor delivers high dynamic performance and a relatively small torque.
