Ruukki Introduces Raex Direct Quenched Wear Plate

From their base in Raahe, in the north of Finland, Ruukki have long had a reputation for being a reliable, high quality producer of steel grades for demanding applications. Major investments in the last 3 years have expanded the production range markedly and Ruukki are now able to offer some exciting new Raex wear resistant steels to the Lifting, Handling and Transportation industries (and particularly at sectors such as Mining, Quarrying and Materials Handling).

Ruukki can now produce a range of Raex wear plate grades, in 400, 450 and 500HB variants. Historically these materials were produced in 2 stages, after the initial hot-rolling operation the plates were then subjected to a separate heat treatment. New developments at Ruukki mean that these materials can be produced by Direct Quenching, so the steel is rolled and then hardened in-line as part of a single integrated production route. This means a more efficient and controlled process, with an excellent surface finish that doesn’t require shot blasting to remove excess scale caused by re-heating.

Ruukki has installed Direct Quenching technology in both its Strip Mill and its Reversing Plate Mill, allowing Raex wear plate to be produced across a wide range of sizes at the same high quality. These materials are generating great interest amongst producers of Rigid and Articulated Dump Trucks, Excavator and Backhoe Loader Buckets, Tipper Bodies and  Mining, Quarrying, Crushing and Screening equipment across Europe.
