Siemens supplies train radios

Siemens Transportation Systems is to supply CSR and GSM-R radios for 44 Electrostar overground passenger trains Bombardier is building in Derby for Transport for London.

The new trains will each be fitted with both types of radios so they can use CSR initially, then be switched over to GSM-R as the digital technology is adopted on the network. The trains are due for delivery to TfL for testing in the summer 2008.

Siemens is working with and Network Rail and the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) to develop its SVR-401 model GSM-R cab radio at Siemens Transportation Systems’ Poole facility.

During the rolling stock build, Siemens is testing the GSM-R radios on the public GSM network, and is providing a guarantee to Bombardier that it will solve any issues that arise out of these tests and trials in Strathclyde.
