SMC expands in the UK

SMC’s Milton Keynes based operation will become the site for the company’s new European technical centre, with an approximate investment of around £4m over the next two years

Steve Bangs, MD of UK market leading pneumatics company SMC disclosed this week at the International Fluid Power exhibition in Birmingham that that the UK Milton Keynes based operation will become the site for the company’s new European technical centre, with an approximate investment of around £4m over the next two years.

In the UK, SMC’s European technical centre will be housed within the current Milton Keynes site – 2,000 square metres will be allocated to factory space and 1000 square metres will be dedicated to offices.

Staffing will consist initially of ten Japanese engineers, specialising in the major product groups of the company (including electric actuators), eight European engineers and five UK engineers.

Staffing levels are forecast to rise to approximately 80 by April 2001 with the majority recruited in the UK and double that number over the next two to three years.
