Software gets the edge

Version 12 of EDS’s Solid Edge CAD software includes Insight.NET web services for collaboration and communication and adds new capabilities for wiring-harness design. It also offers faster drawing creation and extended, associative interoperability with other EDS products such as I-deas and Unigraphics NX.

First introduced in 2001, Solid Edge Insight advances the management of complex product designs. Solid Edge V12 extends these capabilities across the enterprise with a complete set of web-based viewing components that use Microsoft’s .NET technology and new web services for accessing the engineering bill of materials (BOM).

‘The new Web Components in Solid Edge V12 will allow us to expand the use of design data beyond our 35 CAD users to about 70 non-Solid Edge users in purchasing, parts, production control and on the shop floor,’ said Jon Cook, engineering information manager at MacDon Industries in Winnipeg, Canada.

‘This speeds access to product information and allows us to eliminate costly custom search engines we had to develop and constantly maintain.’

Solid Edge V12 adds wiring harness and surfacing design as well.

‘Being able to model wiring into our assemblies eliminates a very time-consuming step in which we have had to manually create wire lists on paper,’ said Bob Tonnancour, CAD/CAM administrator at Liebert, an Emerson Network Power subsidiary in Irvine, CA.

‘Solid Edge allows us to automate the process of generating wiring reports for the manufacturing of our uninterruptible power systems.’

New too are tools for speeding up the evolution from 2D to 3D design.

‘Key to our success is communicating our 3D designs with 2D drawings,’ said Juergen Niesner, CAD system manager at Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH in Regensburg, Germany.

‘Solid Edge V12 allows us to create drafts from our large assemblies three to five times faster than before. That time savings provides two major benefits: we can spend more time optimising and creating new designs and we produce more, custom drawings specifically meeting the diverse needs of our end users, whether they are in production, quality assurance or among our customers.’

The new software also supports NX Gateway for interoperability with other EDS tools such as Unigraphics, I-deas, FEMAP and Imageware.

In addition, it comes with V12 Stream Technology that adds a new Stream/XP user interface, including a set of unique commands that provide Solid Edge CAD users with a new look and feel.
