A heating and air conditioning car dashboard control display unit needed to be assembled to an exceedingly high standard. It also needed to be strong and be durable. An ultrasonic welding technique was used to provide a joint that is stronger than the surrounding plastic.
Forward Technology Industry developed a twin headed machine so the welding operation could be completed from a rotary table by two separate welding processes. The first process fixes two spring clips that activate the on/off switches, by riveting four Polycarbonate pegs. Then the automatic rotary table moves the components on to the second head which fixes a light guide and filter by riveting six pegs.
Hydraulic dampers have been included on both heads, which control the downspeed during the actual riveting process precisely. This was essential to maximise the strength of the plastic rivet head.
