SPI Lasers, a UK manufacturer of optical fibre-based lasers, has won a $1.2 million contract and contract extension from the US Department of Defence (DoD). The contract is to develop technologies for high power fibre lasers over the next twelve months.
David Parker, Chief Executive of SPI Lasers, said, “We are pleased with these additional contract wins which add to the company’s critical mass in the development of high power laser technology, so crucial for future entry into the macro sector, and demonstrate our growing forward order book.”
SPI’s current range of lasers is used to mark, weld, and cut materials used in the manufacture of a range of products. The platform technology being developed to raise laser power levels for use in the macro manufacturing sectors is expected further to widen the markets served by the group to include aerospace, automotive and white goods manufacture.
Among new markets in prospect, as higher-power lasers are deployed, is defence, and the group is currently involved in this sector through contracted development work with a number of companies and government agencies.
